“A question I have is: What kind of weight did you lift when you first started? I know women are supposed to try to life heavier, but where is a good place to start? And where are you at now? (For example, dumbbell bicep curls.)”
A good place to start is a weight you can lift for 8-12 reps with proper form. If you can do more than 12, the weight is too light. When I first started, I was curling 5 pound dumbbells, now I curl 20s. Work your way up each week. =)
One way to progress with the weights is to start with a weight you can lift for 8 reps for about 3-4 sets. Then the next workout, get to 10 reps. The next workout after that, get to 12. Then, up the weight! Of course, if you can lift heavier sooner, go for it! But that’s just an example of a way to progress =)

I’ve been looking for a 5K to do this summer, and Dirty Girl looks like a fun one (especially since Color Run sold out before I could join). However, since it’s $75 (and a bit of a drive from where I live), I was wondering if any of you lovely ladies had ever tried it and could tell me how it was?
I hear a lot of myths on tumblr... the ones that bum me out most are probably the negative ones about weight training. It bums me out because some girls still believe them, and haven’t yet discovered how AMAZING weight training can be to completely TRANSFORM your body in POSITIVE ways!
Weights can not only give you curves in all the right places, they make you STRONG! Weight training helps support your bones and can help make you more independent… who wants to have to rely solely on a man to help them lift heavy stuff anyway!? They help you build muscle so not only will you be “tone”, you will have a faster metabolism… allowing you to EAT more! Who wouldn’t like THAT!? lol.. I know I do!Here are some of the most common myths I hear:
- “Lifting weights will make me manly and bulky”
- “Lift light weights with high reps to tone up”
- “Lifting weights will turn fat into muscle”
Ladies, these are simply not true! Women do not have the levels of testosterone necessary to bulk up the way men do. Lifting light weights for high reps is the equivalent to picking up your purse, your water, your hair dryer.. do those tone you? No! Lastly, fat and muscle are two completely different tissues in your body, one cannot change into another!
Trust me, lift weights.. you’ll be glad you did! =)
You’re working your ass off. You’re running every morning. You’re eating well. You’re eating enough but not too much. You’re busting your ass in every single workout, pushing to your threshold, pouring sweat, but you’re not seeing any results.
Maybe it hasn’t been long enough. Or maybe, just maybe, you’re staring at your abs and not paying attention to your perfectly defined thighs, your beastly biceps, or your seriously sexy back.
One day you’re going to be putting your hair up and notice your biceps bulge in the mirror. You’ll turn around to check out your gnarly sunburn and watch the flex of your triceps and traps. You’ll see a picture of yourself reaching for something and be blown away by the definition in your legs and the cut of your thighs.
You’re working for it and it’s working. Sometimes your body is changing more rapidly than you can shed fat. It’s going to come up and smack you out of nowhere. You’re going to laugh at yourself when you attempt decline pushups with your feet on a bench, then bang out 40 of them without breaking a sweat.
It’s happening even if you can’t see it. Your body is evolving and changing. Give it the respect it deserves. Give it a chance to become visible. You worked for it. Don’t throw that away. You DESERVE to see it.
